Fueling the Funk: Russ Rich, Andy Allder & Debby Holiday Reimagine Prince’s “D.M.S.R.”

The story of Russ Rich and Andy Allder’s bold new take on Prince’s deep cut “D.M.S.R.” (Dance Music Sex Romance) begins in January 2025. Rich reconnected with powerhouse LA-based singer/songwriter with 17 Top 20 Billboard Dance hits Debby Holiday to discuss a fresh collaboration.

“Debby and I had worked together on several projects before, including a cover of the Ann Peebles/Tina Turner classic ‘I Can’t Stand the Rain,’ and we always have the best time collaborating,” says Rich. “So we started talking about doing something new.” A lifelong Prince fan from Minnesota, Rich floated the idea of reworking a track from Prince’s 1999 album—a record that shaped his musical DNA. “I remember hearing ‘D.M.S.R.’ on vinyl in my cousin’s bedroom when I was a kid thinking, ‘We probably shouldn’t be listening to this!’ But growing up, Prince was our hometown hero. No musician has influenced me more.”

When Rich brought the idea to long-time collaborator and production partner Andy Allder, the pair made a surprising discovery—they are both massive Prince fans. With Allder on board, the project came to life.

“I wanted this track to be undeniable joy,” says Holiday. Embracing the spirit of the Purple One, she stacked layered vocals in a style reminiscent of Prince’s iconic sound (including a few of those signature screams) along with her own cheeky ad-libs. Holiday also brought in dynamic frontman/singer/songwriter Derek Day for backing vocals, and together they add a fresh flair that pays homage while creating something entirely new.

Rich and Allder’s main and extended mixes stay true to the funk-forward roots of the original, with Allder’s slapping bass and slick guitar work conjuring the kind of energy that feels like Prince himself stepped into the studio. But they didn’t stop there.

The duo also crafted a peak-time club version—a pulsating, high-energy anthem that doubles as a joyful call to action. Holiday’s vocals weave throughout the mix with a rebellious, electrifying swagger, culminating in her asking the question: “I just wanna know if you’re ready?”—a nod to resilience in uncertain times.

Finally, Rich and Allder reimagined “D.M.S.R.” for the after-hours crowd with a tech house mix that gives serious “Nasty Girl” energy—seductive, edgy, and unapologetically fun.

At its core, this reimagining of “D.M.S.R.” is more than a tribute—it’s a celebration of joy, freedom, and the irresistible power of the groove. A battle cry for anyone ready to fight for their right to feel & live free.

Available worldwide on all platforms May 13, 2025. Part 2, The Remixes, will drop late June 2025.
