Born in Redwood City, California, Carlton is the son of a preacher and gospel-singing, organ-playing mother—music runs through his veins. Raised in the church, he cut his teeth singing in the choir and mastering both the drums and organ. That gospel foundation would later fuse with his love for R&B, soul, and storytelling.

A true dual threat, Carlton balanced a promising football career with his passion for songwriting and performance. In 1997, he landed his first record deal, hitting the road on tour across the U.S. before planting roots in England to further pursue his musical journey.
